How to Play the Ocarina

You’ll find Ocarinas to be amongst some of the easiest instruments to learn.This page will give you some of the basics but much more information is included in the directions that come with each Ocarina and in our Ocarina songbooks

Get an idea of what ocarinas should sound like when you play by listening to audio samples of ocarinas.

Step 1) Make sure you have the correct size

Step 2)

Use the pad, or fleshy part, of your fingers to cover each hole and make sure you cover each hole completely.Please note that the fipple hole on the back of the Ocarina always stays open because it produces the sound. Air leaks in the finger holes cause sour notes so check to make sure you have them well covered.

Step 3)

Use your little finger on your left hand to brace the ocarina

Step 4)

Blow softly. Start blowing very softly on the low notes and then blow a little harder as you go up the scale.In general less is better with the Ocarina blowing just hard enough to to get a clear note gives you the sweetest sound

Step 5)

Use tonguing by saying the letter T at the start of each note. This is necessary to give the note a crisp clear sound.

Step 6)

Try starting with a simple song like Tinkle Twinkle Little Star and focus on breath control or how hard you are blowing.Let your ear be the judge and enjoy.
